Introducing mythIllum

mythIllum has formally enter my life. From today on, she will provide me with all the brightness.. She will be my window to the world of information...

mythIllum is actually my new LCD monitor, to be exact my first LCD monitor. Saw her at PC show on Thurs, but I hesitated, waiting to see if her price will drop on Sat. But alas, when I reach Suntec on Sat, all her sisters were gone from the show. They have found their owner. I have to wait patiently for about 1.5hr for her arrival to the show hall. In fact, she's among the last 3 member left in the family. Compared to other brands/ models, I find mythIllum the most attractive... Below are her specs:

Family Name: LG
Given Name : L196WTQ
Place of Birth: Korea
Size: 19" Widescreen
Response Time: 2ms
Contrast: 3000:1 (Hardware-based, not dynamic)
Viewing Angle: 170°/170°
Input: D-sub,DVI-D
Resolution: 1440×900
Colour: Front frame is black while stand and back is white.
Special Features: HDCP support + ez Zooming + F-Engine

So what's my experience with it? Well, it's a mixture of good and bad.

Pro:
  • Screen looks bigger, good for more stuff on desktop
  • Reading comic is superb! No need to scroll left and right
  • Brighter screen.
  • Cosmetically better than my old CRT of cos. The glossy finish is a plus with that blue LED ON light but I still feel it loses out to a particular Samsung model.
  • Way of the future cos Vista supports Widescreen natively.
  • Webpage do not need to be scrolled to either left or right, back and fro.
  • 16:9 videos looks good. No more large chunks of black bar at the top and bottom

Cons
  • Graphics appear strange when playing DOTA cos Warcraft does not support WS format resolution. But hor newly released games will support WS natively, so this is a good future investment.
  • Certain webpages will be rendered strangely
  • The monitor can only be tilted 15° back and 5° front. All the LCD monitors that I used before in SoC and at work allows me to tilt far more than this. But still this is better than some brands/models that do not allow tilting at all.
  • Height of the stand is fixed. The monitor at my workplace can have its height adjusted so of cos I would prefer to have it on mythIllum...
My desk is too untidy to take pictures of mythIllum, so I will just post those that I found online:

For more details, you can read this review. It is in Chinese as I failed to find a English medium one.
